Best Sci-Fi and Fantasy Magazines for Short Fiction and Genre Reading

The best sci-fi and fantasy magazine depends on whether you want current genre fiction, heroic adventure, award-nominated stories, or a retrospective collection. These five options include a recent issue of The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, a darker speculative-fiction issue, a paperback focused on heroic fantasy and science fiction, and two collections for readers interested in selected or older material.

The Magazine Of Fantasy & Science Fiction, July/August 2026

Check Price on Amazon

This Kindle edition is best for readers who want a current issue from a magazine devoted to both fantasy and science fiction. The listing names Sheree Renée Thomas as editor and includes a broad contributor lineup, including Nnedi Okorafor, Charles de Lint, John Shirley, and Matthew Kressel.

Choose this issue if you prefer a mix of contributors within one magazine rather than a single-author book. Its July/August 2026 issue designation makes it the most current dated issue among the listed selections. The caution is format-specific: the supplied listing identifies it as a Kindle edition, not a print issue.

Grimdark Magazine Issue #48

Check Price on Amazon

Grimdark Magazine Issue #48 is best for readers specifically seeking fiction associated with grimdark speculative fiction. The listed authors include Ken Liu, SenLinYu, Stephen Graham Jones, Gemma Files, and Laurel Hightower, providing a notable range of contributors in one issue.

Choose this issue if its grimdark focus and named authors match your reading interests. It is a more targeted choice than a general fantasy-and-science-fiction magazine. The supplied product details do not specify the format, so check the listing before buying if you require a particular digital or print edition.

Cirsova: Heroic Fantasy And Science Fiction Magazine

Check Price on Amazon

This paperback is best for readers who want both heroic fantasy and science fiction in a physical edition. Its listed contributors include Schuyler Hernstrom, Kat Otis, Brian K. Lowe, and Melanie Rees. P. Alexander is identified as editor, and Jabari Weathers as illustrator.

Choose Cirsova if a paperback format and the magazine’s explicit heroic-fantasy focus are priorities. It offers a clear alternative to the Kindle editions in this selection. Its focus is more specific than a general-purpose genre magazine, so it may be a less suitable pick for readers seeking a broad range of fantasy styles.

The Magazine Of Fantasy & Science Fiction 2012 Nebula Nominees

Check Price on Amazon

This Kindle edition is best for readers interested in a collection identified with 2012 Nebula nominees. The listed contributors include Gordon Van Gelder, Robert Reed, and Andy Duncan. Its award-nominee framing gives readers a specific historical point of entry into the magazine’s fiction.

Choose this edition if you want a dated selection rather than a newly identified issue. It can also suit readers comparing older speculative-fiction selections with current magazine releases. The limitation is its Kindle format and its focus on the 2012 nominees; readers seeking a current issue should consider a newer selection instead.

The Magazine Of Fantasy & Science Fiction: A 30-Year Retrospective

Check Price on Amazon

This hardcover is best for readers looking for a retrospective rather than a single current issue. Edward L. Ferman is listed as editor, with Isaac Asimov credited for the introduction. The title establishes its historical scope as a 30-year retrospective of the magazine.

Choose this book if you prefer a hardcover and want a collection framed around the magazine’s history. It differs from the other selections by emphasizing a retrospective view instead of a specific issue date or genre subcategory. The supplied details do not list individual stories, so check the full listing if you are choosing it for particular authors or contents.

Buying Guide

Do you want a current issue or a collection?

For a dated, current issue, start with the July/August 2026 edition. The 2012 Nebula Nominees and the 30-year retrospective are better suited to readers seeking older or historically framed selections. Check the issue date and contents when a specific period matters to you.

Which style of speculative fiction fits your reading?

Choose Cirsova for its stated heroic-fantasy and science-fiction focus. Consider Grimdark Magazine if you specifically want a grimdark-oriented issue. The broader Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction issue is a reasonable option when you want both major genres represented.

Does format matter?

The listed formats include Kindle editions, a paperback, and a hardcover. Format can affect how you read and keep a magazine or collection. The supplied details do not identify the format for Grimdark Magazine Issue #48, so verify it in the listing before purchase.

How should you compare contributors?

Use the named authors and editors as selection clues, not as a guarantee that a particular story will match your taste. If you are buying for a specific writer, confirm that the writer’s work appears in the edition and review any available contents information.
