The best Mel Bay guitar book depends on how you want to learn: Modern Guitar Method Grade 1 is a straightforward starting point, while its Expanded Edition offers another version of that first-grade method. For chord-focused study, choose Guitar Chords, which includes online instructional video. The Complete Edition, Part 1, is a spiral-bound alternative. An adult-beginner book from another author is also included for shoppers who want a no-music-reading approach.

Modern Guitar Method Grade 1
Modern Guitar Method Grade 1 is a Mel Bay paperback for shoppers looking for a first-grade guitar method. Its title and grade designation make it a clear option for a learner seeking an organized beginning point rather than a book presented specifically as a chord reference.
Best for: New students who want to start with the Grade 1 edition of the Modern Guitar Method. It was selected as the direct, standard-edition choice among the listed Mel Bay titles.
Consider: The supplied product information does not describe the lesson sequence or included learning materials. Compare it with the Expanded Edition if that distinction matters to your purchase.
Modern Guitar Method Grade 1, Expanded Edition
This Mel Bay paperback is identified as the Expanded Edition of Modern Guitar Method Grade 1. The listing names both Mel Bay and William Bay as authors. It is a suitable comparison for buyers who specifically want the expanded version rather than the standard Grade 1 listing.
Best for: Beginning learners who have chosen the Modern Guitar Method and want the edition labeled “Expanded Edition.” It was selected because it gives shoppers a direct alternative to the standard Grade 1 book.
Consider: The provided information does not explain what content is expanded. Check the edition details before choosing it over the standard version if you need to know the differences.
Guitar Chords With Online Instructional Video
Guitar Chords: With Online Instructional Video is a Mel Bay paperback focused on chords. Its listed video component gives this title a distinct format feature compared with the two Grade 1 method books. The product details do not specify the number of chords or the video’s contents.
Best for: Players whose immediate goal is chord study and who want a book listing that also identifies online instructional video. It was selected as the most directly chord-oriented Mel Bay option provided.
Consider: This is the chord-focused choice in the list, not a title identified as a complete Grade 1 method. Confirm the online-video access details with the listing before buying.
Modern Guitar Method Complete Edition, Part 1
This Mel Bay title is listed as Modern Guitar Method Complete Edition, Part 1, with Mel Bay and William Bay named as authors. Unlike the Grade 1 selections, it is identified as Part 1 of a Complete Edition. Its listed format is spiral-bound, a practical distinction for buyers comparing book formats.
Best for: Shoppers seeking Part 1 of the Complete Edition or preferring a spiral-bound book. It was selected to represent a different edition and binding option within the Mel Bay method titles.
Consider: The supplied details do not explain how Part 1 differs in content or progression from Grade 1. Compare the edition information if you are choosing between these methods.
Guitar Book For Adult Beginners
This paperback by Willy Vance is not a Mel Bay book, but it offers a useful point of comparison for adult learners. Its title describes a six-week acoustic guitar method with chords, TAB, and strumming, and states that music reading is not required. It also presents a 20-minutes-a-day approach and real songs in its title.
Best for: Adult beginners seeking an explicitly no-music-reading approach with chords and TAB. It was selected as a relevant alternative, not as a substitute for a Mel Bay title.
Consider: Choose a Mel Bay book instead if your search is specifically for Mel Bay authorship or the Modern Guitar Method series.
Buying Guide: How To Choose A Mel Bay Guitar Book
Do you want a method book or chord reference?
Choose one of the Modern Guitar Method titles if you want a book identified as a guitar method. Choose Guitar Chords if chord study is your main priority. The listed information does not provide a full lesson-by-lesson comparison, so use the edition names and product descriptions to guide your selection.
Should you choose Grade 1 or the Complete Edition?
The two Grade 1 books are the standard and Expanded Edition versions. The Complete Edition is labeled Part 1 and is spiral-bound. The product data does not establish that these editions contain identical material or follow the same sequence. Check the edition details when progression and content are important.
Which format should you consider?
Three Mel Bay listings are identified as paperback; Modern Guitar Method Complete Edition, Part 1 is spiral-bound. The chord book also lists online instructional video. Consider which format and listed learning aid suit your study habits, and confirm access information for online material before ordering.
Are you buying for an adult who does not read music?
The Willy Vance book explicitly describes a no-music-reading approach with chords, TAB, and strumming. It is the clearest match in this selection for that specific preference, but it is not a Mel Bay title. For a Mel Bay purchase, compare the method and chord-book options instead.
